Brad’s racing conquests are the stuff of legend. His cars have been in magazines, yet he still drives with a learner’s permit. When Brad finds out that his street racing nemesis is building a car that might take away his crown, his life becomes focused on giving himself an advantage. To lure his antagonist to race on his home turf, Brad plans a cruise night as a diversion to keep the police busy during the big race. In between, he wheels and deals to earn enough money to build a higher-horsepower engine for his Chevy to protect his title of, “King of the Streets”.
Brad thinks big. His character is revealed by his different outlook on life. His father loans him money to buy cars that he fixes up and sells at a profit. Not only does he repay his father, he pays interest. Up before dawn, Brad cruises the swap meet aisles to find speed parts to resell at a profit the same morning. He boldly marks off a 1/4 mile “dragstrip” in front of his school and wins money by beating the local talent.
Not everything goes Brad’s way though. In fact, his life comes crashing down around him. First, he loses an “easy” race that he thought he had covered. Then, the police find out he’s responsible for the cruise night and arrest him for “inciting a riot”. In Jail, he loses the big race (and $500) by way of a forfeit.
Brad’s antics attract the attention of the new girl, Tammy, but she has her own problems. She’s just trying to fit in and it isn’t easy. In the end, true love wins out, but if you want to find out the results of Brad’s rescheduled race, you’ll have to read the screenplay. ©2009 Tim Gavern
